NEW // Freelance Whale

A friend of mine gave me a CD recently with the current album of Freelance Whales on it. Thanks Benjamin, this is definitely my favourite!
They formed 2008 in Queens, NYC, and have released their album Weathervanes in March via French Kiss. Very Postal Service-esque, I like it a lot!

Check out their video and stop by their Daytrotter Session which was recorded live at this years SXSW.

Lightspeed Champion Is Back With Sophomore Album

Ok, most people might say that the Test Icicles split was a catastrophe but it certainly hasn't done Devonté Hynes aka Lightspeed Champion any harm. On the contrary. He has released his second album Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You in February and - oh my god - it's beautiful.
I only just got the album a few days ago and I can't stop listening to it. This man has got an amazing voice. I've completely fallen for it!

Check out his first single "Marlene":

And if you're still not convinced search for his version of Amy Whinehouse's "Back to Black" (I always get some serious goosebump-action).

INTERVIEW: The Very Best

On August 13th, 2009 I interviewed The Very Best at the office of their label in Berlin. The Very Best is a band comprised of Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit, who all met in London. They've released their first album Warm Heart Of Africa last year, with Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend featuring on their first single that goes by the same name.
By the way, listening to their album in the winter, while the snow was driving everyone mad, was just THE BEST.

Listen to what they've got to say about them meeting in London and their future plans.

Bands I've interviewed (2003 - now)

7 years and about 100 interviews. That might not seem much to some people but since I'm doing this for some free music and a spot on the guestlist I get to pick and choose who I want to interview (well, at least with most of them).
I've tried to list them in chronological order starting in 2003. I might have missed one or two bands. The * indicates the number of times I've interviewed that band/artist, if it was more than once)

The Beginning

Friends often ask me if I've discovered new music recently and there is mostly a long list of bands that I could mention. I usually - very excitedly - give them some recommendations but I'm sure as soon as they get home they've already forgotten. So I though that I should maybe write them all down so that I will only have to refer to my blog in the future. And maybe even some other people like my music taste and get enthusiastic about it.

Since I'm doing interviews with bands and artist for a radio station called Radio Marabu, I get loads of music and get to go to many gigs. Most of the interviews I'm doing are with pretty unknown bands. There's only the odd exception. If you are interested to know what bands I've interviews in the past 7 years, check out my next post.

One more thing before I get started. I'm not much of a writer or particularly good with words but I have a passion for music that I want to share and maybe even support bands and artist with that a little. I hope that's reason enough to start a blog.
