Just Discovered: Admiral Radley

Were you also one of those people, who were really sad about Granddady's split up? Well here's good news! Not only did Jason Lyttle release his solo album, but him and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy and Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart have teamed up in late 2009 to form Admiral Radley. They were pretty quick to release their first album "I Heart California" just over a month ago. I'm having my first listen as I write this and I love it already.

Here you can download the opener:

Check out their live set on one of my favourite Radio Stations KCRW:

I've been a massive Spoon fan for ages or so it seemed. I think I got aware of them in 2005 with the release of their fifth album "Gimme Fiction" but they've already been around since 1996. "Gimme Fiction" really blew me away though and I'd been wanting to see them live ever since. I must have missed a couple of chances but when they played the Frannz Club in Berlin in February of this year, I took the opportunity to get up close and had a really interesting chat with drummer and founding member Jim Eno.

Spoon are said to be from Austin, Texas, but in fact they live all over the States and by this time probably even the last member of Spoon has moved out of Austin, as Jim mentions in the interview.
We are also talking about their current album "Transference" and got slightly interrupted by pretty young fans, waving from the street.

Yes, you might hear some strong parallels to Teenage Fanclub and that's due to them being huge fans who've already had the pleasure to support them years ago.
These songs are pretty old by now but the band is currently working on a new album which is said to be due in early 2011.

First Listen // Arcade Fire - THE SUBURBS

Saturday, August 7, 2010

I remember last year I did an interview with WOLF PARADE at the Festsaal Kreuzberg here in Berlin. We were sitting in the backstage room downstairs and there were these electro beats coming through the walls. The drummer, Arlen Thompson, apologized for the noise and said their friends from !!! (Chk Chk Chk) were recording their next album right next door. I was thinking: "Oh my god!", but appeared pretty laissez-faire.

!!! formed in 1996 and will release their forth album "Strange Weather, Isn't It" August 20th in Germany and August 23rd/24th in the rest of the world.

In November last year their drummer Jerry Fuchs (also in Turing Machine, The Juan MacLean) died after falling down an elevator shaft.
Only now did I realise by looking on their Myspace site who is replacing him: Paul Quattrone. Perhaps for most of you that name does not ring a bell, which is fair enough. It must have been in 2001/2002 that my friend was raving on about a band called Modey Lemon. He had seen a gig and absolutely loved it. Next time they played I joined him and was pretty wowed myself. Then I moved to Berlin and they made it over three times, even supporting Dinosaur Jr. once. I got chatting to Paul and we stayed in touch for a while. So I guess you can imagine now what surprise it was to see his name on the !!! Myspace site.

!!!'s first single "AM/FM" off of the album will also be available as a 12" clear vinyl for all you vinyl nerds out there, which is limited to 800 worldwide.

On their website you can get a download of the single "AM/FM" and this is the video:

Utah - Strength In Numbers

Last year I was booking the band Utah from Denmark. When I took their album "Strength In Numbers" home to check them out, I just could not stop listening to it for 2 weeks straight. It is so intense and sooo incredibly beautiful that I got really excited seeing them live. Eventually I did, twice, at the end of February 2009 and it's been great days.
Because "Strength In Numbers" was released in 2007, they went back into the studio after they got back from those two gigs in Berlin and started to record their second album. It was meant to be finished by autumn but they've had some problems along the way. The singer got seriously ill so now the recording process is on hold.

Fingers crossed that he'll soon be ok and all the best to him!
I can't wait to listen to the new tracks because I'm sure that they've written some serious earworms again, just like on their first album, where there is one earworm after the other.

Check out their website to listen to the whole album as stream. Here is also a video from the early years but it sounds just like it was yesterday.

Utah is a five-piece band from Aarhus in Denmark. They've been around since 2003, where they won the audience award in Denmark's biggest band competition "Live Contest 2003" and played live at the Roskilde Festival. They soon got noticed by the Danish media and in 2006 they signed a deal with Playground Music, home to Franz Ferdinand, The Artic Monkeys, and The White Stripes. That same year, their song "Crash-Burn" was featured on the US hit show "One Tree Hill".

Kashmir - Mouthful of Wasps

Here's another one of those earworm bands: Kashmir from Danmark.

Formed in 1991 by Kasper Eistrup, Mads Tunebjerg und Asger Techau and joined in 2001 by Henrik Lindstrand, they've released their long awaited sixth album "Trespassers" earlier this year.

Their first single "Mouthful of Wasps" off it is such an haunting earworm for me that it makes it worth writing about. It was on the radio this morning and I've got it in my brain ever since. This is the evil bugger:

Here you can listen to a couple of songs of this album:

There is another Danish band that I always have to think of when listening to Kashmir and that's Utah. I'll come to them in the next post.
